Top-quality car park deck waterproofing is vitally important to the longevity of multi-storey parking structures. The waterproofing membrane is crucial in ensuring water drains away from the structure, and prevents structural damage caused by leakage. It also acts as a protective layer to the wear course surface and limits chloride ion attack.
IKO’s range of cold applied liquid and mastic asphalt traffic deck systems are suitable for new construction as well as refurbishment projects and offer a long-term durable solution increasing the lifespan of the parking deck.
Preserving Perfection: The Attributes of Top-Quality Car Park Deck Waterproofing
A typical car park waterproofing system consists of a membrane adhered to the structural slab, with a drainage grid and wearing course placed on top. This assembly works much like a rain-screen exterior wall, as the water trenches over the wearing surface and is drained through the drainage grid.
The ramp areas of car parks are often a challenge for the waterproofing system – they will be subject to increased mechanical abrasion, will be exposed to weathering and rainwater, will collect de-icing salts and will experience complex movement in joints connecting the ramp area with the rest of the support structure and parking decks. In addition, the ramps will be subject to the impact of vehicles accelerating and braking – creating additional stress on the structure.
An elastomeric polyurethane membrane can be the perfect solution to these challenges as it coats the concrete surface and creates a barrier that locks out moisture and chlorides. It also offers an attractive and easy-to-clean surface that can give a face lift to worn and cracked concrete decks. Many elastomeric polyurethane systems also come with a tougher, higher-strength topcoat that can better withstand abrasion in high-traffic areas.
